I keep getting the msg:

Message from server: (there was work but you don't have enough disk
space allocated)

OK. I realize that it's only a Terabyte drive, but couldn't Rosetta
maybe, like, take over one of the 250 GB or 400 GB drives? What DOES
it want, and how do I make it happy? I see NO way of giving it the
disk space it wants --- and how much do it want? That my drives can't supply? I'm willing to hook up another Terabyte drive if it really
needs that space to feel welcome.

Please read the "Please read before posting" message... but the answer to your question is that you need to change the preferences on allowed disk space on the website.

Thank you for your response. 100 Gigbytes does not seem to be enough for Rosetta, and I'm not willing to allocate more. I find this whole thing confusing and will drop out rather than be confused and negative. Thanks again for your help and I hope this project does well.

Check in your preferences again. There are really three setting that play off against one another to determine how much space is being used or is required for R@H.

There is the "Use no more than 100 GB Disk space"
There is the "Leave at least 0.1 GB Disk Space Free"
There is the "Use no more than 50% of total disk space"

(the number above are the default settings)

If loading a R@H Work Unit onto your system would violate any of these setting it will not load and run.

So you have to figure out for your BOOT drive (this is where the BOINC Files directory is stored) how to set these parameters so none of them would be violated if you wanted to download about 50 MB of data (on average).

R@H (for that matter any BOINC program) does not care about any of your disk drives except the startup drive, where the BOINC directory is. I have run R@H on a system with only 2.5 GB available for some time, but to do that I have to balance all three of these parameters.

I think I had a similar problem caused by having disk security activiated within my user folder. I think the computer has a pretend disk on my hard drive that it keeps scrambled. It tries not to have wasted space on this virtual disk. I moved the BOINC data out of my user folder, and I stopped getting the out of space messages.

Is there a way to have BOINC use space in other drives? I have plenty left in other drives but I can't fins where to configure the location of the work files.

Thanks,

Rafael

yes, exactly!

I have a smallish boot partion but I have a very fast set of four raptors in Raid 0 That I use as a scratch disk. How can I get Boinc manager to see that as available drive space?

You grabbed an old thread there Kevin. And the question should be the same for non-Macs as well, so may be more appropriate for the Number Crunching forum. More people will see it there.

...anyway, so far as I know, BOINC basically lives on one disk drive. You can install it whereever you like, but all the projects and active tasks are maintained under that installation directory.

Not sure if there would be any other concerns on Mac, but on Windows I have literally shutdown BOINC, and just copied the entire directory structure over to another drive letter, and run the .exe file from there and it picked up like nothing happened.

Thanks for your response. That is ironic to me because most Window's programs can't be moved as a module and most Mac programs can be. Boinc won't work when transferred to the Raid set. It screams about some items not having the correct permissions and then throws an error message and won't run on what would transfer. Elementary things like deleting plst's before attempting to run it don't help. Editing the program’s r/w preferences from the get info level before attempting to run it does not either. Cleaning out every deep cache with various system utilities before attempting to run it also does not help. The installer, natch, will not even recognize the Raid set as an installable option. If this array had a bootable partition on it, it would clearly be more likely to work, but this is a just a high speed scratch array on a Rocket raid 2320 card which does not support the Open Firmware boot. Even given that complication, I suspect that a terminal wizard could write a Darwin code line that simply tells the app to look at other drives for space as others are not having success with just basic sata and pata configurations. Something like fstab:: goetc~~look==fresps``over__there
(Pardon my mock Darwin) Tell you what, I will do as you suggest and copy and paste out this little exchange to the forum you suggest but, as I pick up enough easy answer points over at experts-exchange, I will use some of my free points and see if I can snag a Darwin genius into world peace and all that. I will let you know if they write a patch for it.
