Hello, I'm new to Rosetta and happy to take part in the project. I'm just curious if my machine is powerful enough to make a difference in the ongoing project. If I increase my ram to 3 gigs will that help? I believe my GPU is a built in intel type so I figure that is not being utilized at all. I'm running at 60 percent so I don't fry this old rig. Any words of advice out there? Many Thanks, Craig |

Hi Craig, We're happy for any help - a giant sand dune is made of many tiny grains, and all that. Regarding GPU, Rosetta@home doesn't use the GPU at all, so even if you had the latest-and-greatest, it really wouldn't help. Regarding memory, Rosetta jobs are somewhat memory hungry, so we recommend at least 512 MB per running Rosetta application. Although some of the design runs can use around 800 MB per running application (these should be specially marked and sent out only to the computers which can handle them), it should never really approach the 1 GB mark. If the Pentium 4 is a single core machine, 1 GB should be functionally enough for Rosetta - adding more memory really won't help with crunching, although it might improve responsiveness (I'll let others comment on their experiences.) Thanks for participating! |

Rocco is assuming you aren't running much else on your machine. If you do have other active programs that also need memory, then more than a GB might be helpful. But Win XP can't use all of 4GB anyway, so 3GB more would not be called for. Keep in mind that in addition to running Rosetta on your machine, you can really help the project by spreading the word to others. You tell one friend with another 1 processor P4, but they mention it to someone with a 4-core rig, and now you've helped bring on many times more CPUs than you alone can do. Some folks don't want to run their rigs full time but perhaps some will see the benefit and do so. Is there a specific link I should put out their in cyberspace? Thanks again, I'm happy to take part in the project. And as a side note, when I have the funds I'll add some more CPU power to help even more. |

Thanks for helping spread the word. The URL I would publish on such places is the project's homepage: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

Thanks for helping spread the word. The URL I would publish on such places is the project's homepage: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta It's my pleasure to spread the word but I'm not finding any confirmed takers |
