You configure the number of CPUs to use in the BOINC Preferences. Rosetta@home does not have an application for GPUs, but other BOINC projects do if that is what you meant.

My old Athlon and Athlon xp`s are off boinc for the summer, they keep the spare room warm in winter :¬)

I accept that they are old and slow but they still work and i dont like things that work going into landfill, not that the `landfill` site that is only one mile from my home actualy is a landfill any more cos its now a hill and can be seen for miles around and it stinks :¬(

I would bet your local Welfare folks that do the Foster Kids would like the old pc's! Mine does, I either put Windows or Linux on the pc, depends if the pc has a Windows sticker or not, and then load it up with free stuff and take it over to them. The kids FINALLY have something to call their own!

My main computer is a core i7 desktop I've had for a couple of years now. Had a lot of heat issues initially - the northbridge heat sink is mounted about a centimeter from the CPU and is too bulky to fit a decent aircooler in there, and the stock cooler was totally insufficient for extended periods of heavy use, I'd overheat after about 20-30 minutes at 100% load at normal summer room temps (which are about 85-90F most of the time during the summer).

Last year I bit the bullet and installed a Koolance system and haven't had any problems since; I was even able to OC it a bit, though not much due to restrictions on my CPU model.

I'm also running Rosetta on my i7m tablet when I'm not using it and it's plugged into AC power, and my old EEE Atom-powered tablet, which isn't active at the moment since I'm away from home for the summer doing an internship and decided not to bring it with me.

Oh I am here because of two reasons, WCG is having issues giving me units that I want, I can get lots of units if I just want to crunch but I am trying to move up some of my less used projects and they don't have enough units. AND I am here because Rosie itself needs to be brought up in my total stats! I have had problems in the past and tend to bounce around a bit but I am trying to get all of my Projects above my Seti numbers! Some like WCG and Rosie have a LONG way to go, others are moving very quickly, such as Moo, but Moo is a gpu project. I will attach my signature so you can see what I mean.

I think the only way you will know if the P3 is worth it is to put in online. I have a laptop crunching for Malaria, only 1 of the 2 cores though, as it is the one by my couch and tv. I have it on one of those tables that will swing over your feet so you can put your feet up and still type, and it is not on your lap.

I took a break from crunching for a while but have since gotten back to doing so.

I still have my Intel Q9550 @ 3.77ghz and I also just built a server with an Intel Xeon E3-1230 at stock speed of 3.2ghz. I am curious to see how it does.

I also plan on building another system for my main setup and I am trying to wait it out to see how the AMD Bulldozer chips do. I would love to build a dual socket with 2 x 12 core processor on another server but I definitely don't have the budget for that.

Tom's Hardware has just done an excellent piece on the relative merits of different CPU architectures.

They tested the efficiency of single cores at a standard 3 GHz speed.

Moral: if you're still using a Pentium 4 for crunching, dump it now.
