I think it would be useful if BOINC had an option to suspend work if the cpu temp exceeded a value. This would be good for laptops which are prone to overheat if there is inadequate air flow.

The primary control you have of heat is the configuration for % of CPU to utilize. If heat is becoming a problem for you, you may want to try 60 or 80% CPU. You do this either via the project website, and then updating to the project, or for a specific host via the advanced view and advanced menu bar pull down and then preferences, and then the processor usage tab. The first method would modify the setting for many hosts attached via the same user account. The second method only effects the host on which it is performed.

Thanks Mod.sense, heats not so much a problem at the moment. I may need to cut back CPU time in summer however. I think it would still be good if BOINC had a cut off temp, just in case something goes wrong.

Your machine should be designed to be able to run a full capacity without overheating. Your computer will shutdown if excessive heat is detected for some reason (blocked vent, fan failure, etc.) so BOINC doesn't really need to be checking as well.

I just want to share what worked for me regarding fannoise and heat. As you said a machine SHOULD be designet for 100% work load, but my laptop cpu reaches temperatures i am not comfortable with for extended periods of time. Not to mention the fan noise. Restricting Cpu time and usage massively did the trick. But the cpu was still using its boost clock and pushed out lots of heat for litte computing power. For me it was well better to reduce the Maximum Processor State in the advanced power settings of Windows 10. So I reduce the clock to base clock speeds and now i can run 100% Cpu usage and time in the bionic settings and have low temps and fan speeds AND! complete in average more work units.
Maybe you could add an option that stops the cpu from boosting the clock-speed for boinc( No idea if this is possible). Or recommend software or tutorials for first time laptop users.
I also might undervolt if i read enough about it to feel comfortable.

For heat control in Windows, eFMer TThrottle is very useful and easy to setup. Controls both CPU and GPU run % automagically.

It has worked for me on everything I've tried it on ranging from an i7-2600S running Win 7 Home to my current Ryzen 9 3900X running Win 10 Pro. Desktop and laptop alike.

His BoincTasks is useful for managing more than one cruncher as well.

Not hard to find. Either do a search or check the BOINC add-ons page.

I just wish he would write a version for Linux.

Yes, this would be a top requested feature according to my survey. After installing BOINC, even experienced users say they don't run it often because of the noise.

I made a simple script to modulate runtime based on fan speed and temperature (the same could be done with CPU power state as well up to a certain point).

Dialing back the runtime by hand in BOINC Manager has the drawback that it is not adaptive, meaning that you could run with higher utilization at night when temperatures are lower than during the day. This can be clearly seen from my logs. You also need a feedback based control loop because the user's interactive computer use also generates a variable amount of heat that can cause "fan attacks" as well if you only set a constant utilization factor.
