What happens when a task receives a computational error? Is there a way to restart the task? Just curious.

When a task ends that way, you have no way to try again. But the server assigns the task to another machine to see if it gets a better outcome. In these cases, the work unit will have more then one task under it.

For example, yours:

it was reassigned to a Windows machine which was able to complete the task without error.

This helps the project team locate problems that are specific to Linux, or to Windows and isolate them from those that seem related to a specific machine that is having problems.

Well, it must be a steep learning curve, because I'm still getting computation errors. I wonder if I should withdraw from the project if my work has to be second-guessed. Am I making a meaningful contribution to the science? Or have I been demoted to a mere tool to sharpen quality control?

Don't know if you can still see this, but if all of your tasks are giving computation errors on Linux, it's because you need to install freeglut (OpenGL utility). Getting this will vary based on your Linux flavor, but for Debian & Ubuntu you would say sudo apt-get install freeglut3.
