I have begun experiencing problems with the BOINC graphical client "boincmgr." I am running Kubuntu, the KDE flavour of Ubuntu, version 8.10 aka Intrepid Ibex. My version of the boinc-manager package is 6.2.12-1. The problem is that the graphical manager no longer displays the project that I am running. I have tried several means to "bring up" the project; nothing works. boinc is definitely running on the system. Several checks confirm that "top -u boinc" shows rosetta applications consuming CPU resources. The console command "boinc_cmd --get_state" similarly demostrates that my host is attached to a project and is processing work units. When I click in the graphical user interface of boincmgr on Tools | Attach to project or on | Attach to project manager, the status bar at the bottom of the window briefly states "connecting to localhost" and then falls back to "Disconnected". Under Advanced | Select computer, there are two choices: localhost and Xenophon (my hostname; I studied Classical Greek in a previous existence). Choosing "localhost" brings up the same brief "connecting to localhost;" selecting "Xenophon" does nothing. Here are the meaningful lines from the top of the output of "boinc_cmd --get_state": bruce@Xenophon:~$ boinc_cmd --get_state | head -n 22 ======== Projects ======== 1) ----------- name: rosetta@home master URL: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ user_name: brmiller0423 team_name: Canada resource share: 100.000000 user_total_credit: 266617.734708 user_expavg_credit: 487.178224 host_total_credit: 13447.636642 host_expavg_credit: 219.252308 nrpc_failures: 0 master_fetch_failures: 0 master fetch pending: no scheduler RPC pending: no attached via Account Manager: no ended: no suspended via GUI: no don't request more work: no disk usage: 0.000000 last RPC: 1230989002.723477 project files downloaded: 0.000000 bruce@Xenophon:~$ What can I do to coax boincmgr into displaying useful data again? |

Even if you're running boincmgr on the local machine, it still needs to connect to the daemon like a remote computer. This means you can't connect to the daemon with a blank password (unless you've configured it that way); try going to /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg, your password is a random string that lives in that file. Under Advanced > Select Computer in boincmgr, insert localhost for Host name, and the password above for the password, and it should connect. |
