I would agree legman. We have a new HP server here at work with a 64 dual core Opteron. We are running a SQL db and a few other things on the single chip. We have room for another but we have no need for it as we are not even coming close to pushing this thing.

yeah my coworker was ragging me pretty hard for even considering a quad.. these damn chips are xpensive too!

I cant wait to see what 2 X 270s will do at rosetta!

Im still not even sure if this machine will be a server or just a gaming/audio machine..

I might turn my dual mp2800 into a server.. Do you think the dual mp 2800 will host the three websites I have pretty easy? they dont get a lot of traffic.

Legman,

Servers that I get to play with

about 200 Dual Procs, about 50 Quad Proc's, I think 15 8 Procs, and 1 16 Proc.

All High end Xeon's.

We do not buy single Proc's even if the application only needs one. The minimum we buy is now a Dual Proc server.

Now that being said, of the 50 Quan Proc's, probably 35 of them are way under used. The 8 Proc and the 1 16 Proc servers are fully utilized. But they are used for MASSIVE databases (oh, and everything 4 Proc or higher has 32 GIG of Ram in them).

All that being said,

I would say you are NUTZ if you buy a Quad box. If you want the crunching power for BOINC, get 2 duals for cheaper. Granted the output will be a little less (the overhead of the OS will take a good chunk of cycles on the first proc), but you will save money and have 2 PC's.

There is very little you personally can throw at a Quad Proc server that will even think of using the 3rd and 4th proc. Actually, there is very little that you can do personally that will even touch the second Proc in a 2 Way box. Other then using apps like FAD/Boinc.

Now, if this is a WORK server that will be used for other things, then I would say you are nutz for considering putting any type of DC app on it. Work servers should never have anything that will work the crap out of them because they are supposed to be around 365 days of the year 24 hrs a day for many years. (my understanding was this was a personal server for your personal web use.

thanx kulmak, that answers the other question i posed at mauisun.. can a box be a "All-n-one" machine. I had a feeling you couldnt have a machine ba a gaming station and a server and a cruncher.

thanx again

You most certainly can use a Decent PC (preferrable a Dual Proc) be an all in one PC. Even a single Proc, but it would not be as good.

If you are using Linix or Unix, I dont know how, but you set the processor affinity for the apps to use what Procs you want.

In Windows, you find out what the Processes that you want to assign to a specific Processor are, right click on the process, and choose Processor Affinity, then check the processor you want it to use.

In what you are talking about, I would use a PC with 2 nice processors, lots of Ram (like 2 to 4 gigs, but 2 should cut it), along with SATA drives (perferrably 10K drives, but 7200 drives would work also).

Install all of your "Server" apps on the PC, Launch them, then set the processor Affinity to use the second Proc. You can even go through and set anything non OS related to use the second Proc also. But that is up to you.

Then install your game (it will use the first proc by default) and play. It should work just fine.

As for Crunching, if you set it to Always on, it will level your gaming abilities. So you will either need to set it to use IDLE time or set it to Suspend when you want to game.

Personally, I would set it to IDLE that way it will not negativly effect the server applications you have installed on them.

Any ideas?
I just reformatted my server as there were some very funky things happening. Anyway, it has 2003 Server running on it and I used a non server firewall, Zone Alarm, that seems to work for the most part. I am noticing that even though I allow BOINC to go through it is getting hung up an aweful lot.

I'm thinking it must be the firewall. The reason I used Zone Alarm is that is incredibly easy to setup and administer. Can anyone give me a name of a Firewall for servers that is easy?

Hmmm... does anyone know what ports BOINC uses? I'm thinking that I can set up port forwarding and give that a go instead of using a DMZ.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have started using the Sygate free one. It is easier to setup than zone alarm. I had similar problems to yours when the last zone alarm update came out. With Sygate you can select any of the networks your computer is conected to and quickly click the type of conection you want. It's really good. The only time I have known it come a bit unstuck was when I changed a manually configured ip addy (ended up taking it off and putting it back on before I realised what was wrong) Install and set up in no time at all. Nice interface etc

Been there done that?

80 and 443? for HTTP and HTTPS connections to server. 1043 and 31416? for internal communications. That's off the top of my head, so you may want to verify it in the Wiki. I'm only sure of the 80 and 1043 numbers.

Well I got one cpu out of my bro-in-law. He wasn't comfortable with me installing it on all 4 machines so I was thrilled to get the one that is on 24x7. Tonight is my dad's pc! hehehehehe

Having issues with me-new-server though. Damn firewall! I haven't had the time to sit down and configure it so it seems to be blocking all my internal traffic as well as some outgoing =(. I will take a look tonight after I'm through at my pops house =).

As for the memebership drive contest, I'll pass on that one as I am already doing everything in my power to get people involved. Let someone else get the stuff and use that possibility as their motivation.

I used to use Tiny Personal Firewall because it was free and did a decent job. But then I got tired of running firewalls on all the boxes. I currently am using a DSL SPI firewall/NAT router.

Do not listen to the bs that NAT is a firewall. it is super easy to get around NAT if you are willing to take the time to do so.

But the SPI firewalls are ok. The big firewall guys have progressed well beyong SPI, but for home use, it should be good to go.

Now, the key to any firewall, do not just open stuff to do so. On all the of the desktop firewalls, the mistake that most people make is to simply click yes any time they get a pop-up. Then they end up with a Firewall that looks like swiss cheese.

If you get a pop-up asking you to open something, ALLWAYS click no the first time.

I do not care if you are trying to do something at that moment and you think it is right or not.

If you are trying to set something up, then look at the info, click no, and try to reset it up. If you get the same info, then it should be good to go.

If you are not trying to set something up, then most likely you want to click no anyways.

I have had many issues in the past of having smart trojans, spyware, etc.. that waiting for me to install something to try to communicate out. Then if you have a firewall set to help you configure it, you click yes to everything (not knowing any better), and end up opening the ports for the malware also.

As soon as I get my insurance to replace my stuff, I will be back to using a PIX 506E firewall. Cost me about $500 off of ebay, but it is a true firewall. The peace of mind was worth the money.

Damn kulmak! I would love to buy a hardware firewal for my server but that is some serious cash. I have triplicate of my important stuff so if I get hijacked or a drive dies I will be back in business in a day or so.

I installe Symantec's Internet Security last night and so far so good. Although it has me so locked down right now that I can't even hit my FTP server. ARGH! I have port forwarding configured and it has worked in teh past so I'm not sure what the hell I'm doing wrong now. Hopefully I'll have some time this week to get my stuff figured out instead of working on everyone else's issues.

Is there something wrong with the rosetta server? I am unable to connect and I wanted to know if anyone else is having the same issue. Let me know.

Good and not good all at the same time. At least, for the moment, kulmak is still behind me =) But once this thing kicks back in I might be in for a big surprise.

Man I have to get some more pc's going!

Front pages way's they are doing a temp fix (to much demand on the servers) given the clients cannot auto generate jobs here, guess it's sit and wait.
Unless your attached to a different project as well.

Guess they're still waiting for the newer servers.

P.S. Top 1000 Boinc overall now

Should we do like we did with FaD and run something besides rosetta so we can at least keep crunching?
