his paypal costs for that transaction are going to wipe out any "profit" he makes, not to mention ebay's costs. but hey, you can buy anything on ebay if your crazy enough to buy it. |

Another auction this time for 20,000 credits. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

will be interesting to see feedback from buyer of the original auction, will seller provide was what was promised. would be interesting to see if 20k of points sells for same price as 2k..... this raises some interesting questions. the "spirit" of boinc / ?@home is volunteer / donation. if these "clusters" would otherwise not be crunching for ?@home, then perhaps for a cruncher with a "slow" machine, the winning bid of the auction would be less than the cost of electricity for the "slow" machine to crunch that many credits. otoh, if top rac'er's started requesting $ or they will take existing crunchers offline or go elsewhere, sorta goes against the spirit. not certain where all this is going to lead, but i guess at this point in time, the genie is out of the bottle..... Another auction this time for 20,000 credits. |

It would seem that it inevitably results in other project credits being auctioned and a relative price comparison between projects, which ultimately should give you a pretty good idea on how much people believe in a project, or on which project's have relatively easy credits. But always keep in mind that they could have created another user ID and purchased this from themselves just to make it look as though there is a market for such things (just look at the free publicity they've received so far). I agree, if someone started a non-profit and took in old machines and showed disabled people how to fix 'em up and get 'em running, and/or they placed machines in homes of those that cannot afford heat, and paid their electric bill for housing the machines then I could see contributing to their cause. But I'm certainly not going to pay directly just for credits. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. The statement is correct, the credits do not have a monetary value. It's selling them on EBay that brings them monetary value :) ...after further review... the FAQ stands! Touchdown Seattle! Seems the first auction for 2,000 points went well, per eBay feedback: Great seller, service promptly delivered. saynomoretongues ( 5 ) Jun-18-07 07:38 Folding@Home Points (2000) (#200118450633) US $1.50 Just noticed the following about current auction: "In addition, we will match half of the points purchased for our own team, Hyper Cluster." So, if bidder is in it for the science itself, a 50% bonus..... but, getting to what i had feared (and mentioned earlier): "otoh, if top rac'er's started requesting $ or they will take existing crunchers offline or go elsewhere, sorta goes against the spirit." so far, after a quick search, i am unable to locate team Hyper Cluster at f@h..... would be interested in seeing what they've got "under the hood"..... |

Don't companies pay data centers to compute their work? Maybe this is something like that on a micro-scale, hehe. It'd actually be very cool if funds could be raised to buy time for Rosetta@Home work units, but I fear $1.50 wouldn't get a second even ;) On the other hand, it can't be that expensive either or companies would just set up their own centers... |
