Hm, 15th place (if I counted right and trust your figures ;-) ), but it's o.k.
Interesting stats, btw.
Finland rules!

Of course, Lordi just came into my mind. Although: IMO the song is horrible, but I love the fact that they won. I heard there've been some great parties in Finland that night, right? ;-)

BTW II: I hope this "cafe" is the right place to write some off-topic...

D'oh! I forgot to include:
Iceland 7,618
Ireland 22,666

IMO, Lordi sucks. Yeah, there were parties. I wasn't there. :-)

An interesting enquiry would be the number of privately owned PCs per 1000 population of each country......

Well in Finland in 2004 there were 366 internet connected people per 1,000 inhabitants and 779,000 broadband subscriptions.

Scandinavians have a few advantages over several other countries :

- Electricity is a little less expencive

- Summer heat doesn't affect crunching too much

- many heat up their rooms with electricity anyway (at least in Sweden, I have been told)

And especially for the Finns :

- Nearly all Finns are quite perfect speaking English language and English is the most-used project and forum language

- DSL is available nearly everywhere (I don't know that for the other countries in the north)

- Crunching doesn't interfere with drinking ;-)

(I think I would make quite a good finn, just give me a little tontti somewhere in the south and I'll be happy - and some Salmiakki Snapsi and Lakritsi ice cream *yummmm*)

US census data shows 51% of households have a computer and 42% have internet... but these are from the 2000 census.

65% of children under 17 live in a household with a computer.

South Korea Rosetta: 976,936 (BOINC combined: 41,928)

I just read that 80% of south koreans are behind broadband connection. Total number of internet users: 34 million. That place would be a good target for some BOINC advertisement.

You can get population and number of internet users directly from the CIA.

Denmark, second place I see, population 5,450,661 (July 2006 est), internet users 3,762,500 (2005). Of course, this will be less valid as shared public access terminals are probably quoted as single users whereas many people use them per day - note the queue in the library!

I'm happy to see Portugal there. Such a small country and with economic problems (except for politicians), is in good shape and with a lot of crunchers.
