I've been using rosetta@home for backfilling on a HPC system since last year, but I haven't gotten new tasks for a while. I always see the messages about missing virtualbox, but I cannot install this on the machines. I could run a container image with the rosetta workload if such a thing would be provided somehow.

Best thing to do is probably to choose another project and keep Rosetta as well since every now and then they have some non-Virtualbox work.

I haven't had work units in months. My guess is that they have shut down the project, and never bothered to tell anyone. This seems to be evidenced by the fact that they are running Ubuntu 16.04 on their servers which hit end-of-life in April of 2021. I have switched back to Einstein at Home at World Community Grid. I have shutdown all my PI 4's since they don't have either work units that will work on a PI 4.

I installed VB the other day. Downloaded some work (2GB file), they failed for some reason. I uninstalled VB. If they've got work, I'll run it, but not installing VB just for it.

Python Tasks require 7.5GB of disk space per Task for the VM image, and a minimum of 3GB of RAM (although they actually use much less). The actual Task data file size s similar to Rosetta 4.20 Tasks- several hundred kB.

It doesn't matter what you have, what matters is how much BOINC is able to use- and that is set by you in your Computing preferences, DIsk settings. And regardless of how large you might set the "Use no more that" value, if the "Leave at least" or "Use no more than xx%" value is smaller, then that is the value that is used (same with the memory- you have to make it available to BOINC to use under the "Memory" settings).

Sorry I didn't get back to you, been out of town.

Disk:
Leave at least .1GB free.
Use no more than 90% of total.

Memory:
90% for both and 75% for page/swap.

And it currently has 14 cores running Rosetta, slightly throttled to keep the heat down since it's not liquid cooled, something it hasn't done in months. And yes it's still whining because virtualbox isn't installed.
The other computer has all 24 cores running something other than Rosetta and Rosetta is also whining about virtualbox not being installed.

I've looked around off and on for this a bit. Want to make sure that requiring VirtualBox for tasks is the expected behavior. There are a few threads on this matter e.g. https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=14814#103235. If there is no way around this, could someone please provide directions for the 'thinnest' way to add VirtualBox on Linux? Is there a way to provide VirtualBox it without maintaining another OS instance?

Fixed one host with the setting here https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/hosts_user.php. Didn't know there was an allow virtualbox option on the host detail page.

The Ubuntu 19 version has installed on Ubuntu 20 and I am currently downloading Python tasks. Will follow up once it starts crunching.
