After a reboot this morning following software installation (WinDVD) my PC won't connect to localhost.

I've repaired, uninstalled, reinstalled with same result.
I've also uninstalled and reinstalled to a different directory (BOINC2) with the same result.
Any ideas on what to try next?

I take it nobody at rosetta is looking at this page! After solving the problem last week, with a little help from friends in the Unofficial Forum, it has all happened again.

Complete uninstall/install (twice) in different directories it and it still won't connect to localhost. Due to lack of tech support at this site I think I'll take my spare cycles elsewhere. One would have thought that in a week someone who worked for the project would have checked this forum for reported problems and could offer us help to overcome it. I know I am not alone in this problem so some guidance would have helped a number of volunteers.

The problem is microsoft is sitting on the port assigned to BOINC.

Workarounds:
Starting BOINC manually after the boot process has finished will often get things going properly.
Waiting a bit and then selecting the localhost will sometimes help.
Installing as a service install will enable you to crunch even if you can not manage things.

BOINC has applied for a new set of ports that hopefully will not be blocked. The development versions are also hopefully able to deal with a blocked port more gracefully than the current release version. So look for a real fix in the 5.4.x version of BOINC.

As to why this was not answered here, the second post say "problem solved" so why would anyone answer a solved problem?

The newer version of BOINC already use a different port.

(at least 5.3.16 and a few version before did)

Nobody is looking at the science pages for number crunching questions. This thread is off topic of the Science forum and will be deleted in 6 hours unless the project team wants to keep it.
