The ProteinInterfaceDesign protocol is one of the newest in the system, and one of it's quirks is that it hits specific models where it does not complete the work in what passes for a normal amount of time. 7 hours sounds like a 3 hour runtime preference (the default) plus the 4 hours it takes the watch dog to kick in and clear out the task.

The Project Team is working to better understand these long-running models and if passed performance is a good predictor of future code changes, they will find the cause of these and find a way to steer around it so the models complete in a normal timeframe. ...until that point, every once in a great while, you hit one of these long-running models and granted credit suffers.

It is a random luck of the draw as to who is going to encounter one of these. So the good news is that they do not indicate any problem on a given machine. Another piece of good news is that your poor credit performance gets rolled in to the average and ends up pushing the credit granted per model a tad higher than it would have otherwise been. So the rest of the time, as you are running normal models, your credit award essentially reflects a small premium for the risk of encountering one of these long ones.

1 - I'm looking for information on the incidence of BOINC & Rosetta on my Computer, Is it no adverse effect on it, to work so much ?
2 - What's about the internet connexion volume, I have a limited free number of GB by month with my internet Provider (100GB/month). How to have information about the exchange volume via internet ?

I run 4 work units of Rosetta on my quad computer and have yet to find a time when it has delayed my computing.

My limit is 5 GB per month and haven't come close to exceeding the limit when I only download Boinc, routine emails, web browsing etc.

Bonjour Philippe. Your machine has 2 CPUs and 4GB of memory, and so there will generally be no memory conflict between your use of your computer and the use by Rosetta@home. Since BOINC applications run at a low priority, the CPU will yield to whatever you are using your computer for, then when it has completed that, it will return to running Rosetta@home.

Your monthly bandwidth should be (much) less then 1% of your 100GB monthly limit. With such a high limit, you probably have a high speed connection as well. But if it becomes an issue, BOINC also allows you to limit it's use of the network connection to minimize any conflicts with your web browsing. You can limit by time of day, and by transfer speed. BOINC does not allow you to limit by GB per month. But you will find Rosetta@home does not have any excessive data transfers. The exact amount varies. If there is a new program version for example, then you sometimes have to download your first copy of the program. Your random mix of tasks will also cause variety in the exact volume of data transferred. But we are talking about variations in MB per month, not GB.

What do I do if I've lost five tasks due to someone else reformatting the laptop which was carrying those tasks? I already re-installed BOINC and updated the laptop so that the tasks no longer are idle and instead can be passed to other crunchers. But they're still designated to me. Any advice on how to speed things up and not wait for the deadlines to expire?

All you can do is have the deadlines reached and then the tasks will be reassigned. The project server is not configured to reissue lost tasks. The way the project works, any given specific tasks are not crucial to the outcome. It is the cumulative efforts of all of the tasks combined that yield the results. So, no harm, nor delay done here. The project is designed to accomodate such things happening on occasion.

According the the Message Boards' top page, the most recent posting on Rosetta@Home Science is 6 days old. Where the hell is the message?

I can't see it on any variety of sort option, at least 2 pages deep.

I've run into this invisible message problem before on Rosetta. Why isn't "Most Recent Post" one of the sort options?

The standard message boards that are a part of the server side of BOINC have a few short comings. One of them is that if a post is moved from one board to another, the "last update" timestamps are not reverted to the actual last post that will display on that board.

I select "most recent reply first" in my message board preferences and any threads with new posts will sort to the top, right below those with stickies.

Dear Moderator,
I had Boinc running on my PC for several months. Everything was ok.
I did not receive any new task since many weeks, and there is no way to obtain them from the server.
I tried to reinstall the new version of Boinc, check computer free space on hard disk, change profile settings and so on, but no result.
So, please can you check and tell me what is wrong ?

The project server didn't have any work left to send around the time of your post. Noone was able to download new tasks for a few days there.

I assume that nobody (probably external labs) has prepared new tasks before holidays ??.

Is sad to say but seams that, if Rosetta is so important for research... how is this possible?. Any moderator can explain this?.

I have just joined rosetta@home as it seems a worthwhile project. But I am disappointed to find no information about current projects - I would really like to know what projects I am contributing to. The "Rosetta@home Active Work Unit(s) Log" last had a posting more than three years ago! (7 January 2008). Have I missed some internet link?

Nope, its just that this project does not feel the need to actively communicate with its volunteers despite repeated requests to find someone or someway to tell us something. One of the grad students did communicate for a short time, but when his project was done that was the end of any further communication.

The only "communication" we get is an occasional blurb from Dr. Baker about the results of a project that got published in a journal. Other than that there is no new information to be had other than what is posted by us volunteers.

Create a new thread over in number crunching with this same information about your computers and their problems. Someone that monitors the boards from us crunchers may have an answer. Snagletooh aka Snags might pop up and say something if you post it over there.

No, the BOINC manager will automatically bring down the new update as soon as your machine is assigned work from the new version.

The only updates you have to worry about are to the BOINC code. When BOINC comes out with a new version, they update is done by the user, when you want to make the change.

Hello Rosetta,

I have a machine running for you but the files that are ready will not update.
However I got new ones every time. A lot of WU's have run for nothing as the deadline was never meet due to thus uploading problem.
Will you do something to this, or can I find another project for this pc?

I have mentioned this over and over, and it seems I am not the only one with this. Will you please take action?

Well, by the fact that the overall project Teraflops appear normal, and that I see my own work units uploading, I can infer a few things. While several others were having upload problems earlier, they seem to be resolved now. And the upload problems that have come up have been with specific servers. So it becomes a random shot as to whether your specific task tries to go to a server that is having a problem.

Because your machines are hidden, I'm not certain what OS you are running. Nor can I get any perspective on whether all of your uploads are failing or only a portion of them.

It sounds to me like there must be something specific about your environment. Since your machine is able to contact the server and get more work, it shows BOINC is able to contact the scheduler. Are you at home (where you would have defined all firewall rules), or at work?

I would suggest you enable the file transfer debug to see more specific details about what is going on during the upload attempts. The FAQ about cc_config.xml describes how to enable the file transfer debug. Be sure to review it carefully, you must add at least the three directives mentioned. Beyond that, the ones you want are called file_xfer & file_xfer_debug. And the 0|1 notation is meant to show that you can chose a zero (to disable the file transfer debug msgs) or a one to enable them. So your file will need at least a start and end, plus a line for <task>
<file_xfer>
<sched_ops>
and two like these:
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>

Once you have updated or created your cc_config.xml, you have to go in to BOINC Manager and tell it to read the config file. From then on, your file transfers will place detailed messages in the event log.

You might post the details of what you find to the thread you opened specifically for the upload problem.
