I was looking at the work unit names and wondered what they meant. On Seti they are pretty simple. They start with a date which I presume is the date the sky scan was taken.

But the Rosetta names are quite complex and vary a lot. so, anyone know what they mean?

Here are just four examples but there are many more variations.

I agree with you that the work unit names on rosetta are wierd and wonderfull things,
and i havent got a clue what they realy mean either,
though to them that chose them it is probably as simple as a b c 1 2 3 etc and makes as much sence as the seti@home names,
you just can`t beat a good p_loop_2x3 or an EEde_EEDe as a bed time story for your kids :¬)
Well not if you are an android with a sence of humor,
Kryten where art though when we need you . . .

Well I remember some info from a long time ago about the names.
Usually somewhere in that mess of a name is the protein name.
Ed, I looked at your task list and randomly chose two tasks.
You have one that is looking at CYCA.
I searched cyca + protein and one of the results that came back was: Role of the sRNA GcvB in regulation of cycA in Escherichia coli. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19118351). Another search for ECH19 came back with Enoyl-CoA hydratase: Reaction, mechanism, and inhibition (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0968089602003334)

Somewhere in my bookmarks I have a page related to a list of proteins or something along that line where I could enter the name and find out what it was.

But those two links should give you a starting place to research further what protein your system is working on. All the rest of the title is related to what the grad student wants to do to that protein.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Greg that does give me a good start.

Svincent, I will take a look at those earlier threads.

All your posts are very much appreciated.
