Hi,

I am trying to process using a virtual server that only has 360MB of memory assigned to it.

Would this be the cause of my BOINC not being given any work units?

Below is a sample of messages.

Thanks in advance.

No not that particular group of messages it isn't, line #218 means some are too close together, meaning you are requesting new tasks too close to the last time you asked and the Project Server is automatically slowing you down, no hammering on the door to get in! Line #254 means the Server itself is down for maintenance, meaning no one gets in!

As for low memory it will probably get units but they would process sooooo ssllooww that it may not be worth it! I just checked one of my machine and each unit is taking about 130,000k of memory and then Boinc itself takes another 10,000k or so. That is written kind of funny but probably means 130meg and 10meg so I could be mistaken.

Hi mikey,

Thanks for taking a look, I have taken another look at messages and below are the ones that have appeared since my last posting.

Do you know what else could cause me being sent no work?

Thanks,

Richard.

I'm curious how/why you've got a dual-core opteron with so little RAM? Are you running FreeNAS or something similar?

For Rosetta you'll probably need 360MB per core just for Rosetta at times, although it's usually less than that. Do you have any spare RAM slots, is it DDR memory and what country are you in?

It is a virtual environment and he has only given it 360mb.

I just checked one of my machines running Rosetta and it is taking 530mb of disk space for the files, prior to even running Rosie. I wonder if that is the problem. My cache is only 1 day.

Ah! Skim-read it and missed the word 'virtual'!

I guess the options (which might not be options for you) are:
Increase the VM's RAM allocation
Increase the computers RAM to allow the above
Run BOINC/Rosie in a separate VM with more RAM
Run BOINC/Rosie outside the VM in the main OS

The basic requirements have been changed since I last looked, and now indicates that 1GB is the minimum memory requirement.

But I don't think that's the hard limit, so that's why you got as far as you have. Still, I would expect that the number of work units available for <512MB systems to be limited. As in there may be periods of time where you cannot get work.

Hi,

Thank you to everyone for your replies.

It all makes a lot more sense now.

My virtual server provider will be upgrading my RAM to 480MB in mid July, so I'll see if I get some jobs once that happens.

Thanks again,

Richard.
