I keep receiving the following message when I'm running BOINC for Rosetta@home on my XP SP3 machine:

"The password you have provided is incorrect, Please try again"

I can go several days without this happening, or have it happen every few hours. Stopping BOINC and restarting it reconnects me. Any thoughts?

You are seeing the message in the messages tab of the BOINC Manager?? Or on the website's message boards?

BONIC Manager, as a result it has disconnected from rosetta@home. Stoping/Starting the BOINIC Manager reconnects it. Its been happening daily now.

All I can say is that I've not seen any other reports of such a problem. Please verify the EMail address and password of your account by logging off the website and logging back on. Then in the BOINC Manager, detach and reattach using the confirmed EMail address and password.

It could be a problem with your gui_rpc_auth.cfg file, which is used to store a password for remote management of BOINC clients. Do you monitor BOINC on remote computers, or do you log in directly to the computer that has BOINC installed?

I log on directly. It's a Windows XP machine. The only unique thing I can think of is that this machine is running TrueCrypt. But it has for a couple of years and this problem has only developed during the past 6 months.

The Project Team mentioned the file server crash and reload... did you happen to alter your password in the month of December? No, even if you did, then you would not be able to sign on to the website using a password that would not work on the client.

The scheduler that the BOINC Manager connects to uses the same password as the website. Your machine is not delivering the proper password to the scheduler for some reason. ...or not the same EMail address. ...or did you configure an authentication key instead?

At least for a test, I'd suggest you detach from R@h, then create a new R@h account as you attach again and see if that is successful.

You may want to follow the advice given in the last post of this thread at the BOINC forum. It is about a user of Windows XP SP3 getting "The password you have provided is incorrect ..." message in BOINC Manager.

The suggested remedy is to search your computer for the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file (it may be in a hidden folder), open it through Notepad and change the default 32 character password to something shorter. However I would suggest making a copy of the file before you make any changes in case you need to restore the previous version.

I'll give that a try, but what's odd here is that it will connect, it's just that after several hours it will "disconnect". So the password/ID works.

Any chance some anti-virus software has stepped in during that time and "corrected" the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file? You might jot down the change date/time when it connects and works, and then the file should not be modified after that.

Possible, I'll have to check it out. Could it be a timing thing? The machine that has this problem does run rather slow.
