I am going to splurge on a new computer to run some newer programs and BIONC tasks better. Here's what I have got for my CPU/GPU

I see the L2 and L3 cache sizes, but how much actual memory does it have?

I think I get it now, it's JUST the processor. You'll want at least 1GB per CPU. So ideally 6-8GB for the quad. ...but you knew that already.

R@h doesn't have a GPU application, but other projects do.

Yes. RAM, DRAM, SDRAM, whatever it is that your machine will use to store data used during processing.

Sorry to get in this so late, if you have not already done this then you might want to consider that right now the AMD/ATI cards are faster when compared like to like. The Nvidia cards may come out faster later on but for crunching the ATI cards are faster right now. I have no idea about gaming though.

One other thing, if this is YOUR machine as opposed to just a cruncher you might want to get more cores if you can afford it. The more you can get now, the longer it will be before it becomes a door stop. If it just a cruncher it is okay, you are looking at bang for the buck and not cutting edge 6,8 or even 12 cores is not it!! But for your personal machine the closer to cutting edge you can get the longer it will be before it becomes a cruncher only!

for those who have an intel mobo (vice amd) and are fortunate enough to live near a micocenter (or know someone who does), you can't beat $199 for a core i7 950.

although it only has 4 physical cores, hyperthreading gives it a total of 8 virtual cores...

have an i7 920 on my Dell desktop, and just received a lenovo laptop with an i7 Q740.

love to watch 8 Rosie wu's run at once !

No need for a lot of memeory. I have a quad with 12Gb and an i7 quad with 12Gb also. When running full Einstein WU, 4 for the quad and 8 for the i7, only 3.2Gb of mem is used.

No need for a lot of memeory. I have a quad with 12Gb and an i7 quad with 12Gb also. When running full Einstein WU, 4 for the quad and 8 for the i7, only 3.2Gb of mem is used.

The amount of memory will vary depending on the type of research done by the project you are connected to. 1GB per core is probably a good target to aim for with Rosetta as modelling large proteins can require substantial resources.

If you are happy to do work for a project that asks for less memory then good for you.
