Message 55539 - Posted: 4 Sep 2008, 17:41:37 UTC - in response to Message 55526.

I'm currently having an issue with some 5.98 and Mini 1.32 tasks. The tasks are usually slated to complete in under 3 hours. They run merrily along and then when they hit about 9 minutes and 50 seconds left until completion, they virtually stop running.

Some of the recent models have been very large and do indeed take a long time. The behaviour you have noticed is normal. At least one model must be completed even if it exceeds your time limit. Once a model is completed the Boinc manager looks to see if it can complete another model within your three hours. If it can, it continues but if not, it uploads and starts another work unit.

Myself I have recently had models in the 5-7 hour range. Look carefully at the graphics and you will see the occasional movement.

I have a G3 that I leave on 24 hours a day and I don't believe I've received a single unit in over a week. I've tried Updating, Resetting, and downloading the newest version and still nothing. Can't they get some units for PPC Macs going?

... they are going to extra measures to funnel work through one machine to feed several behind it...

This is exactly what I want to do. I don't care about getting my name on a marquee or whatever... I just want to run this on 3 machines not on my network. Let me see if I can explain the situation and what I want.

I am a systems / network admin for a company in Iraq. We do not allow non-company computers on our network.

I have 2 personally owned P4 2.8 GHz 2GB RAM Dell Optiplex 270 computers running Ubuntu and a 1.7 GHz Intel dual core 1GB RAM laptop running XP / Fedora 7 (multiboot) in my living quarters.

I would like to use my work laptop to download packets to crunch, take it to my room, put it on the small LAN I have there, and then let the other 3 computers work on the packets. They can then report back to the laptop, which I can carry back here to my office and hook up online to swap the completed units for new work.

Is there a way to do this that wouldn't be considered cheating? I did a few quick searches here on the forum, but I didn't see anything helpful.

How can I check my ranking/standings compared to other members?

Click on (Statistics), at the top of this screen. On the left side of the resulting screen, you will find a menu of choices that will display the results. Unfortunately, there is no express way to scroll through these results. If you want to go from the top to the bottom, you have to click on "next", over and over again.

Q: How can I change my Rosetta handle shown on my message posts?

A: Unfortunately the default when you set things up is to take your Windows user name and place that in the blanks. And this leads to many many accounts being called "administrator".

You can change your account UserID. If you've signed on to Rosetta to view this message board, then just click the link on top of this message board page for "participants". Then click on the link "other account info", you can change your username there. It is shown on the screen simply as "Name (real name or nickname)".

I've changed my username before, but I'd soon like to change my Team Name at some point (I am the founder). Is there a way of doing that or do I have to create a new team from scratch? (Hopefully not)

Do I need to re-attach my existing team members to a changed team name or does the Team Number cover it?

To change a teamname that you are the founder for, click the "[Participants]" link on top of any message board page, down in the community section it shows your team, and a link for "administer". Click that, and then click the link to edit team info.

Many thanks. That looks perfectly clear for when I need the change to take place. I assume there are no changes needed for existing members - no reason why there should be.

[b]A couple of times recently, my CPU essentially failed to follow its commands, set up through BOINC settings, to run full-out. I have a 2-chip setup, and one was running as it should; the other was hardly running. After re-starting the whole system, I got it back to normal, but what would cause BOINC to simply not follow its instructions? I checked all the settings both in the client and for each of my projects, and they were normal and correct as always...

Why so many "Client error", "compute error", and "validate error"? Lots of people including me seem to mave quite a few.

What is the difference?

I've been running Rosetta for a month or so and until recently everything worked OK, with tasks being downloaded, processed and reported correctly. However for the last few days when the screensaver comes on I get no pictures of the proteins (they used to display correctly) and the status always says 'initialising', even after several hours of CPU time. I haven't made any changes to my preferences in the BOINC manager, so what's happened? Do I need to abort the current tasks and get new ones?

Brakspear, I see your machine has the suggested minimum 512MB of memory. These ddg_predictions tasks seem to be using a lot of memory as compared to other tasks. I just started one on my own machine and it needed 512MB within the first 2 minutes.

...now after 20 minutes it is over 800MB.

Yes. For your case, I would suggest you simply abort that task. It appears to be one of those with "ddg_predictions" in the name and these seem to be at least consuming more memory then your machine has (which will cause a lot of swapping), and perhaps having other problems as well.

Thanks for that. I've aborted the problematic ddg_predictions task and everything is now working OK again. I'll watch out for these types of tasks in future and cancel them if necessary. I've been thinking about a memory upgrade anyway, so maybe someday I'll install an extra 2GB of RAM and then won't have any issues. Thanks again for your quick response.

I wonder if anybody has experienced problems with Rosetta/BOINC when the PC is streaming video. More often than not, it looks like it "compromises" the tasks running such as they would stop then upload then the report would give a lot less credits than requested. I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Rosetta's behavior should not be related to other applications running on the machine. Perhaps you don't really have enough memory to do everything you are asking it to do?

The reason for less points sounds like the tasks were cut off early, and so they didn't get as many models completed. So, less credit, but less computing time used as well, due to the premature end.

The current BOINC versions allow you to define that BOINC should stop running any time the machine's CPU % crosses above your configured threshold. The intent behind creating this new setting was, I believe, to help set things up so that BOINC would automatically stop when your machine gets busy with video or something and so reduce memory conflicts etc. with other applications.

Greetings!

Why won't Rosetta assign work to Macs without Intel processors? There are surely a lot of them around still, G4's PowerPC's, etc. Slower than the newer beasts, but can still contribute!

You've hurt my old Powerbook G4's feelings!

In all honesty, it isn't just Rosetta. Very few projects will assign work to it. Currently I'm running SZTAKI desktop grid. Perhaps the projects based in Central and Eastern Europe have to accomodate older computers out of necessity.

If Rosetta won't be using the GPU power for quite some time, why does it request CUDA/GPU work now from my nvidia 9800GT?

If you note, it isn't Rosetta@home making the request, it is the BOINC Manager. The BOINC folks didn't build in a means of identifying projects that do not have a GPU application, so each client has to "learn" that by not getting work and doing less frequent retries. On the plus side though, if a GPU application later became available the client would eventually notice this and begin doing work without any required user intervention.

I am getting this over and over:

Sun 01 Aug 2010 08:12:23 PM CDT	rosetta@home	Restarting task cs-td-2-sen15_6-9_20162_72_0 using minirosetta version 214
Sun 01 Aug 2010 08:13:00 PM CDT	rosetta@home	Task cs-td-2-sen15_6-9_20162_72_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
Sun 01 Aug 2010 08:13:00 PM CDT	rosetta@home	If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
Sun 01 Aug 2010 08:13:01 PM CDT	rosetta@home	Restarting task cs-td-2-sen15_6-9_20162_72_0 using minirosetta version 214

After seeing this Thursday, July 29 (although it may have been a different task id), I reset Rosetta@home. Again Friday, July 30, I saw this (again I'm not sure if it was this specific task) and reset Rosetta@home. Same thing Saturday, July 31, and now again today. Is there anything else I can do?

Not sure what is happening there lnthomp. It appears you've already aborted the task. That was what I was going to suggest.

Xcuse me, but I noticed sometimes that a task which is scheduled to last for - let's say - 4 hours has been running for something as 50 hours (I leave one of my computers always on and maybe I don't look at it for some days especially when I'm away) and is still at 40% or so. I usually stop that ones. But wasting much time. I partecipate also to other projects (Seti e WCG) and it never happens with their task. Can somebody help me? Foxtrot

I wanted to create a place for all of the new participants to drop their questions and get help in getting started and with running Rosetta. The hope is that we can build a good supplement to the FAQs.

If you are a newbie, welcome to Rosetta!! Post your questions in here. If you are not a newbie, post a question and the answer here that you know the newbies will have. And try to provide links where they can get more details on the issue.

Q: Progress Percent not advancing?
A: Rosetta recomputes the progress percent at the end of each model. The model number is shown in the graphic. As long as the "steps" are continuing to progress, it is working. Once it completes the model it is working on, it will recompute the progress. At that point the progress % will be determine by looking at the time it took to complete the first model, as compared to your WU runtime preference. If your WU runtime preference is low (<4hrs) you will frequently see the progress % jump from 1.xx to 100%, or into the 50% range. Basically, each different protein takes a different time to crunch a model. Some proteins will crunch for several hours to complete a single model. Others will crunch a model every 5 or 10 minutes. It is the nature of the science being done with Rosetta.

BOINC and Rosetta have measures in place that will abort work units that aren't running properly. So, in general, unless you see some specific advice to the contrary, you should NOT abort work units (WUs).
