Well my beast of a system has been running around the clock for close to a year. I must admit it was exciting to be part of the bionic project. But I must admit the project has taken a toll on my Electric Bill. With my solar panels, I have accumulated 3000 KWh in credits. Since my 16 CORE AMD 1950x has been running, I think I've burned through 2,200 KWhs. At 11 cents a Kwh that's $242 contributed towards the project. There is no feedback if my 5.5 Million credits have done anything significant towards solving protein problems. So I'm left wondering if the impact of my electrical consumption is worse for the planet vs saving lives with my computing. My computer has been ranked as high as top 40 systems producing results. I've had a few unexpected hiccups with Microsoft deciding to update my system and restart it in the middle of the night. But I think I am going to give up on the project after 6 Million credits. Give my system a bit of a break and also bank a few more KWhs on my net meter. It's been fun, but not sure productive!! |

Thanks for contributing. I think this is a worthwhile project. Neal |

Have you looked at GridCoin? Apparently that's a way to be compensated for participating in RAH. If you figure it out, please post here. Neal |

Scooter, thank you so much for all of your crunching. I know it is a bit underwhelming, but, as a research lab, the productive output of BakerLab is generally found in research papers. So, every time you see a post about a new paper or a new article published in Science, this is some of the output of your contribution to the project. The team is not (generally) directly searching for a specific cure to a specific disease, they are learning how proteins work in general, and how to predict whether one protein can disrupt another (i.e. whether a vaccine or immunization can disrupt a disease or build a resistance). They are learning how to model these protein interactions digitally, and how to distinguish a "cure" from a jumbled amino acid strand. And every two years, there are comparisons done with other research labs using other approaches to the problem (CASP), and BakerLab is always a top performer at these events. Showing they can produce meaningful, accurate models very quickly, against a wide variety of protein structures. Kudos on the solar by-the-way. I lease some panels in a community solar garden myself. Keep in mind that you get a double on your solar credits if you crunch R@h during the cold seasons when you are heating your home anyway. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

It's been fun, but not sure productive!! What does it mean "productive"? We are volunteers, so no profit for us. The advancement of science is our gain... |

It's been fun, but not sure productive!! I think it is a feedback issue. I understand we are volunteers and no profit, but if somebody came back and said "Last month you helped us find a solution to bla bla bla. Your computer did that. " Instead I'm wondering if my contribution is really doing anything. If in 6 Million credits, it did not find something.... why am I contributing? There are a Million computers chipping away this problem. It is just not clear I'm really accomplishing anything[/i] |

Thanks for all CPU cycles. I strongly believe the best is to come in the future with the data that is being generated. As for the power use it is much worse if it wasted on Bit coin, ect. I use 4 laptops and generated 5 million credit between Rosetta and WCG this year. I have Kill o watt meter on each system and average 42 watts/hr per machine or 4.0kwh/day or 1,471 kwh/year. Our rate is .13 /kwh =191.00/year. I also installed a 7kw solar system and in the daylight have no problem covering the power requirements. I have been looking for a way to only run during the daylight so I would only use the power generated by the panels. If anyone has a solution please post. |

How much memory does it take to run 32 Rosetta threads? Neal |

How much memory does it take to run 32 Rosetta threads? My system has 48 GBs of RAM. I run around 15.2 GBs. I only run 24 at a time. Looking at the Processes in the task manager, it varies by thread between 213 MBs - 710 MBs , |

Looking at the Processes in the task manager, it varies by thread between 213 MBs - 710 MBs , I started a thread about the Threadripper 1950x. I believe I'm pulling about 350 Watts / 24/7. So 0.35 KWh * 24 hours * 30 days = 252 KWh / month. |

I would like to see updates more often too. And It would be a good idea to select cause. For example I’m running folding@home for cancer and I would like to research for cancer in rosetta too. And I really wonder if those researches will have a short term effects on drug discovery etc. |

On my Bonic manager I go under "Options", "Computing preferences",Daily Schedule. Only thing is you can not let the computer go to sleep mode. I would install a kill a watt meter and measure the idle wattage. On my laptops that is about 14 watts/machine. I have been testing the "task scheduler" to auto wake the PC's from sleep mode to the time off day under the bonic daily schedule. No luck yet. Other wise I am wasting 60 watts at idle over 5 systems. My total power over the 5 machines is 210 watts. Since I have laptops I want to go to sleep mode which is in the 1 watt/machine. On your system if the idle is low (10-20 watts) that might be Okay since you only have one machine and your output is around 200 watts running. |

Getting the PC to automatically wake itself at a specified time is going to be difficult. EDIT: I tried googling "automatically wake up computer" and I found some hits that look promising. https://www.howtogeek.com/119028/how-to-make-your-pc-wake-from-sleep-automatically/ |

I think that rather than trying to wake the computer, the power settings should be changed to not go to sleep when no user is active. As for BOINC running at specific times of day, the preferences allow you to configure the times of day you wish to be running BOINC. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

I was able to get Bonic to Autostart after setting the time of day computing in Bonic and letting the PC go to sleep mode. I also used the link below to set up the Task Scheduler to auto wake the PC, however to make the PC continue to run after waking, I did not enter the " /c “exit” arguments" that was in the instructions.. It has been working the last two days. I set Bonic to start running 1 minute prior to the Task scheduler is to wake up the PC. So if Task scheduler is set to 6:00AM ,Bonic is set to 5:59AM for start time. I then reset my PC power management t to sleep mode in 5 minutes so when Bonic shuts down the PC will shut down shortly afterwards, Watt draw was .4w. You also need to enable the (allow timers) in the power management section. It took a few times to get going. In setting up the system I would set Bonic to shut down 5-10 minutes before the wake timer was set to open. That way I could see it was going into sleep mode. If you are running Win 10 it will all ways wake to the login screen, but Bonic was running. I did find a web site that provided the info on how to get around that also. |
